Hunting the best small hatchback in Australia circa 2023? Toyota Corolla (especially the Hybrid) nails economy and safety, but rear-seat space and road noise can irk. Mazda 3 feels premium and steers sweetly; visibility and creeping prices dull the shine. VW Golf is polished and comfy with strong turbos, yet option costs and fiddly infotainment test patience. Hyundai i30 brings value, long warranty and a fun N Line, though base engines are merely fine and ride comfort varies with wheel size. Also worth a look: Kia Cerato (space/value, older safety tech), Peugeot 308 (style/ride, pricey), and Suzuki Swift (light, fun, but smaller and sparse on tech).
