best time to cross the simpson desert Page 4

The best time to cross the Simpson Desert is the cooler, drier season—roughly May to September—when daytime temps are civil and nights only mildly judgmental.

The South Australian side is typically closed from 1 December to 15 March due to extreme heat and safety risks, so summer is a firm “don’t”.

Go in a high-clearance 4WD, lower tyre pressures for sand, carry ample water and fuel reserves, and check track conditions just before you leave.

You’ll also need the appropriate permits (e.g., a Desert Parks Pass) and to avoid travel after heavy rain—nothing glamorous about being bogged till next Tuesday.
