best towing vehicle for caravan Page 8

For caravans, you want torque, wheelbase and a realistic payload, not just a glossy “3,500 kg” brochure number. For heavy tourers, the Toyota LandCruiser 300 and Nissan Patrol are towing royalty with 3,500 kg braked ratings and stout drivetrains; for dual-cab value, look at the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D‑MAX and Mazda BT‑50—also 3,500 kg when sensibly specced.

Hauling something truly hefty? American pickups like RAM 2500 and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 bring bigger GCMs and tougher cooling, at the price of size and thirst. Check the fine print: towball download (often around 10% of van weight) counts against payload, and you need headroom in GVM/GCM once passengers, fuel and gear climb aboard.

Long wheelbase, diesel torque, trailer-sway control and a brake controller make life civil; good mirrors and suspension tuning stop the wobbles before they start. If you’d rather skip the homework, browse Tradingpost for tow-ready rigs and the bits that make them behave on the Hume.
