best ute for towing 2023 Page 6

If you’re towing in Australia, most big-name dual-cabs shout “3,500 kg braked” then whisper about payload and GCM—so read the fine print. Think beyond the headline number: stability, cooling, gearing, and rear suspension matter when the trailer starts doing the samba.

• Ford Ranger: strong drivetrains, great towing tech and manners; watch GVM/GCM maths and ball-weight eating payload.
• Toyota HiLux: tough and trusted, good support network; less grunt and comfort than the newest rivals when loaded.
• Isuzu D‑MAX/MAZDA BT‑50: torquey 3.0‑litre, sturdy chassis, helpful driver aids; ride can get jiggly with heavy towball loads.
• VW Amarok (V6): effortless pulling power and stability; pricier trims and big wheels can nibble at practicality.

Whichever you pick, weigh your setup, use a brake controller, and leave margin—because the only thing worse than sway is explaining it to the insurer.
