If you’ve spotted a tiny black jumper in Australia, it’s probably a jumping spider (family Salticidae) rather than something sinister. They’re diurnal hunters with big forward-facing eyes, famous for short hops and curiosity, and are generally harmless to humans.

Bites are rare and usually mild; they’re far keener on flies than fingers. Exact species ID needs a clear photo, but the house-wandering dark salticids are common and not medically significant. Safest move? Cup-and-card it outside and let it patrol the mozzies. If you get unusual symptoms after any spider bite, seek medical advice—but panic is strictly optional.
