The black widow spider, famous for its shiny black body and red hourglass mark, is actually not native to Australia. Instead, the Australian equivalent is the redback spider, a far more common venomous arachnid around these parts.
While black widows can be found in some imported goods or in very limited numbers, Australians should be more concerned about the redback, which sports venom potent enough to cause serious illness, though fatalities are extremely rare thanks to antivenom.
For those worried about creepy crawlies, always check shoes and outdoor gear before use, and keep your garden tidy to discourage these eight-legged nuisances.
