bmw x5 e70 problems Page 7

The BMW X5 E70 can be brilliant when pampered and grumpy when neglected—like a purebred that’s discovered Aldi kibble. Age and kilometres expose the usual European foibles, and the exact gremlins depend on whether you’ve got a petrol six, V8, or a diesel.

Here are the usual suspects:

• Oil leaks from valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets; cooling system woes (plastic tanks, water pump, thermostat).
• ZF 6-speed auto issues: mechatronic sleeve leaks, valve body wear, hesitant or flaring shifts.
• xDrive troubles: transfer case wear or actuator gear failure; front driveshaft spline corrosion leading to loss of drive.
• Rear air suspension bags and height sensors leaking or tired.
• Diesels: EGR/DPF clogging, intake carbon build-up, swirl flap concerns, turbo actuator faults.
• Petrol turbo sixes: HPFP, injectors and coils; V8s add thirst and occasional cooling or timing grumbles.
• Electrical niggles: battery/IBS and alternator issues, iDrive quirks; sunroof drains blocking and soaking carpets.

Get a pre-purchase inspection and a full diagnostic scan, then budget a contingency fund—because Munich’s finest still like a spa day. Strong service history is everything; a cared-for E70 feels premium, a neglected one teaches expensive lessons.
