brakes making a grinding noise Page 7

If your brakes sound like a coffee grinder having a bad day, stop pretending it’s character and get it checked. Grinding usually means metal-on-metal, which is about as relaxing as it sounds and twice as expensive if ignored. Common culprits include:

• Worn pads down to the backing plate chewing the rotors.
• Debris (stones/grit) caught between pad and disc.
• Rust build-up or a lip on the rotor face after sitting.
• Seized caliper or dry slide pins causing uneven wear.
• Backing plate or dust shield bent and rubbing the disc.

Test gently at low speed; if the noise is constant or worsens under braking, park it and book a mechanic—towing is cheaper than new rotors, calipers, and your dignity. Left alone, it can hurt stopping distances and cook more parts than a summer barbie.
