buff out car scratch Page 9

First, wash and dry the area; dirt is sandpaper in disguise. Run a fingernail across the scratch—if it catches, it’s into the paint and you’ll need touch-up or a pro; if not, it’s likely clear coat and buffable. Use a dedicated scratch remover or light cutting compound on a clean microfibre, work small circles with gentle pressure, then wipe and inspect. Repeat for 2–3 passes; if you’re getting nervous, good—that’s your brain protecting the clear coat. A dual-action polisher on low speed with a polishing pad is safer than a rotary; keep the pad clean and don’t linger on edges. Finish with a finer polish and a wax or sealant to hide your sins and protect the shine. If the scratch shows primer or metal, stop and book a paint repair before it goes from “oops” to “oxide”.
