Buying a car in NSW from VIC is doable—just don’t expect the plates to follow you home like a stray kelpie. If it’s coming into NSW, you’ll need a Blue Slip inspection (AUVIS), a NSW CTP Green Slip, proof of purchase and identity, then pay stamp duty, plate and rego fees at Service NSW. If the car is still on VIC rego you can usually drive it back, but you’ll surrender the VIC plates when you register it in NSW (the refund, if any, is a Victorian saga for the seller). If it’s unregistered, grab an interstate/unregistered vehicle permit to move it—police frown on “I’m just testing it, officer.” Once registered in NSW, the Blue Slip covers the initial inspection; later years need the usual eSafety (Pink Slip) check. Bring evidence of NSW garaging address and the VIN/engine numbers matching paperwork, because clerks love numbers more than you love weekends.
