buying a car interstate nsw to act Page 1038

Snagged a bargain in NSW and want it wearing ACT plates? Sensible—and slightly paperwork-flavoured—move. You can drive it home on its current NSW rego, but to register in the ACT you’ll need an identity check, a roadworthy inspection, proof of purchase, MAI (CTP) insurance, and to pay stamp duty and rego at Access Canberra. If the NSW rego has lapsed, grab an Unregistered Vehicle Permit to get it across legally without playing “will the tow rope hold?”. Once ACT-registered, surrender or cancel the NSW plates and chase any pro‑rata refund with Service NSW—don’t run dual regos unless you enjoy conversations with fines. Do the usual PPSR check, verify the VIN and engine numbers, and make sure there’s no finance owing; that cheap price can have expensive secrets. Found the car on Tradingpost? Lovely—just keep all receipts and IDs handy and you’ll be cruising past Lake Burley Griffin looking smug in no time.
