Buying a car interstate from NSW to Vic is perfectly doable; just don’t expect the rego to teleport across borders like your AFL loyalties.
NSW registration doesn’t transfer to Victoria—you’ll re-register it in Vic with a Victorian roadworthy certificate, proof of ownership, ID, a VicRoads appointment, and then pay stamp duty and fees. Before handing over cash, run a PPSR check so you don’t inherit someone else’s finance, write-off history, or criminal résumé.
Getting it home is simple: if the NSW rego is current and the plates stay on, drive it; otherwise grab an Unregistered Vehicle Permit (from Transport for NSW or VicRoads) for a one-way trip. When re-registering in Vic you’ll usually cancel the NSW rego and return the plates in NSW—resist the urge to treat them as garage art. Sort insurance, keep the receipt, and book the RWC promptly; paperwork done, bragging rights commence.
