Buying a car in Victoria involves a few bureaucratic hoops courtesy of VicRoads. Once you've found your dream or dud, you must transfer the registration within 14 days to avoid penalties. This includes completing the Notice of Disposal and ensuring the vehicle's roadworthy certificate is up to date—because no one enjoys a surprise breakdown. Registration transfer fees apply, and stamp duty is calculated based on the vehicle's market value. For used cars, expect to shell out anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand AUD depending on the car's value and registration status.

For the nitty-gritty and to dodge scams, VicRoads and CarShowroom offer comprehensive guides and listings. Remember, the paperwork is as crucial as the car itself—don't skip it unless you enjoy fines or unregistered driving.
