buying a repairable write off Page 81

Buying a repairable write‑off can be a bargain or a boomerang that returns with interest.

In Australia, rules vary by state: some jurisdictions allow re‑registration after identity/structural inspections (VIV/WOVI), while others—like NSW—ban most repairable write‑offs from returning to the road except limited exemptions. Always run a PPSR check, sight pre‑damage photos and receipts, and get an independent inspection; insurers and lenders may say “nope”, and resale will be a game of limbo. Price it with a hefty discount for stigma and the cost of passing inspections, not just the shiny paint. If you’re comfortable with paperwork and patience, it can work; if not, walk away before your wallet learns new swear words.
