buying a used car checklist victoria Page 8

Buying a used car in Victoria is like navigating a minefield with a blindfold—except the minefield is full of dodgy dealers and the blindfold is your own optimism. Here's your checklist to avoid getting fleeced:

• Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and ensure it matches the registration papers.
• Inspect the car thoroughly for rust, panel gaps, and signs of major repairs.
• Look under the car for fluid leaks.
• Test all electronics and air conditioning.
• Take it for a test drive to check for strange noises, brakes, and engine performance.
• Obtain a Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) report to check for finance owing or if the car is stolen.
• Verify the car's registration status and if it has passed the Victorian Roadworthy Certificate (RWC).
• Negotiate the price using CarShowroom and Tradingpost for market comparisons.

Remember, if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always get a professional mechanic to inspect before handing over your hard-earned cash.
