In NSW, motor vehicle duty is charged on the dutiable value (whichever is higher: purchase price or market value).
For most passenger cars it’s 3% up to $45,000, then $1,350 + 5% of the amount over $45,000.
Example: $38,000 car → $1,140. $60,000 car → $2,100 (that’s $1,350 + 5% of $15,000).
Rates and concessions can differ for motorcycles, commercial vehicles and certain exemptions, so always check before you budget.
Consult official documentation for exact figures.
