If you fancy real beds, a proper cuppa, and fewer arguments with tent poles, a camper trailer is the sweet spot between swags and a full-fat caravan.

They tow light, sip less fuel, and go further off the beaten track, yet still pack a comfy bed, slide-out kitchen, and enough storage for three kids and a labrador. The catch is setup time and canvas: wet pack-ups, zips and stitching, and the occasional dust ingress if seals are past their prime. Look for a strong chassis, sensible ball weight, braked axles, decent water capacity, sealed storage, and a tidy 12V system with a DC–DC charger and solar input. On inspection, check winches/struts, hinges and stoneguard, rust spots, mouldy canvas, and that every light, pump and charger actually works—preferably before the outback does the QA. Aussie-made off-road rigs hold value, imports can be great if well-built and complied, and the used market on Tradingpost is ripe for scoring a setup that’s already done the shakedown.
