Short answer: you might be under the limit after “one beer”, but it’s a lottery you don’t want to win.
For full licence drivers in Australia the legal BAC is 0.05; for learners and provisional drivers it’s 0.00, and some commercial/heavy-vehicle categories are zero too. A “standard drink” here is 10 g of alcohol, and a typical 375 ml full-strength beer is about 1.4 standard drinks, which can nudge you over depending on your size, food, and timing. Your body burns roughly one standard drink per hour, but that’s a rough guess, not a free pass. Penalties for getting it wrong are ugly—fines, demerits, and losing your licence—so if you’ve had any alcohol, the smart play is don’t drive. Call a mate, a rideshare, or take a stroll and pretend it’s “cardio.”
