Yes—selling an unregistered car in Queensland is perfectly legal, and you don’t need a Safety Certificate (RWC) to do it. The buyer will need a Safety Certificate, CTP and registration before it can legally touch the road, so think tow truck or an Unregistered Vehicle Permit for any test drives. If the car was previously registered and you’re cancelling it, remove the plates and sort the paperwork with TMR; no plates means no sneaky “just a quick lap around the block” antics. Do give a proper receipt with VIN, date, price and both parties’ details—future you will thank present you. And if you were selling it registered, you’d need a current Safety Certificate before advertising, but that’s a different sausage sizzle.
