Short answer: you can switch your comprehensive policy to a replacement car, but you generally can’t transfer it to a new owner. In Australia, comprehensive cover is tied to the policyholder; when the vehicle changes hands, your cover stops for that car at the moment of sale.
Call your insurer before or immediately after the handover to add the new vehicle—your premium, excesses and any listed-driver conditions will be recalculated, and cover may be subject to approval. If you’re not replacing the car, you can usually cancel and get a pro‑rata refund of the unused premium. Adding someone as a listed driver isn’t a transfer; you still own the policy and the responsibility. And just to avoid pub myths: CTP (the rego bit) is separate and may transfer with the registration in some states, but that’s not comprehensive.
