The check engine light is your car’s way of clearing its throat—ignore it and you’ll soon cop the full opera. If it’s flashing, back off and pull over; a misfire can roast the catalytic converter quicker than a snag on a summer barbie. If it’s steady, check the fuel cap first, then read the fault codes with an OBD-II scanner or have a mechanic scan it. Usual culprits include oxygen sensors, ignition coils, MAF sensors, or a tired catalytic converter. Keep driving gently if it runs smoothly, but don’t put it off for weeks unless you enjoy paying for avoidable repairs. And no, disconnecting the battery to “clear it” is not a fix—it's just sweeping the crumbs under the mat.
