In Victoria, a car deposit receipt should clearly show buyer and seller names, the vehicle details (VIN, rego, odometer), the deposit amount, and the date.
Spell out any conditions (subject to finance, inspection, roadworthy) and whether the deposit is refundable if those conditions aren’t met, plus the balance due and deadline.
From a licensed dealer (look for an LMCT number), the receipt should reference the sales contract; for a private sale, have both parties sign and record contact details or IDs.
Get it in writing, get it itemised, and keep a copy—because nothing ruins a Saturday faster than a mysterious bank transfer and zero paper trail.
