In Victoria, your horn isn’t a musical instrument; it’s a warning device, full stop.
The Road Safety Road Rules 2017 (rule 224) say you may use it only to warn other road users or animals, or as part of a vehicle’s anti-theft system.
Toot-toot goodbyes, “OI!” blasts at red lights, or celebratory honks after the footy are all unlawful uses and can earn you a fine.
Your car must also have a working horn, and cyclists need a bell or similar warning device.
Use it sparingly, save your neighbours’ ears, and you’ll stay on the right side of VicRoads.
