In Australia, putting a child seat in the front seat is mostly a “nope” with a side of fines.
Children under 4 must not sit in the front of a vehicle with two or more rows; ages 4 to under 7 can only sit up front if every rear seat is already occupied by under‑7s.
Never put a rear‑facing seat in front of an active passenger airbag—unless you enjoy playing airbag roulette.
If you’ve only got a single‑row vehicle (like a ute), you may use the front seat with the correct restraint, the seat pushed back, and the passenger airbag switched off where possible.
Fit the right Australian‑approved restraint/booster and top‑tether, and check your state’s road authority for the fine print.
