car ticking noise

A ticking noise can be anything from harmless fuel-injector chatter to the mechanical equivalent of a ticking time bomb. Start by checking oil level and condition—low or dirty oil makes lifters and timing gear chatty. Note whether the tick rises with RPM, appears only cold, or gets louder under load; those clues point to where the gremlin lives. If it’s loud, metallic, and new, stop driving and get it inspected before the engine redecorates itself.

  • Cold-start tick that fades: lifters or piston slap.
  • Tick with RPM, front of engine: timing chain, tensioner, or pulleys.
  • Sharp tick near manifold: small exhaust leak.
  • Light rhythmic tick at idle: injector noise (often normal).
  • Tick after an oil change: wrong viscosity or low oil pressure.
