For the 2021–22 income year in Australia, the ATO cents-per-kilometre rate is 72 cents per km, capped at 5,000 km per car—so a maximum claim of about AUD $3,600.
No logbook needed, but you must reasonably work out your business kilometres (the school run and Bunnings sausage detours don’t count).
For context, it rose to 78c in 2022–23 and 85c in 2023–24, with the same 5,000 km cap.
Great for simple claims; if your costs are chunkier, the logbook method may win—assuming spreadsheets thrill you more than Sunday drives.
