Changing car ownership in Victoria is less thrilling than a beige Camry, but at least it’s straightforward.
Seller: provide a Roadworthy Certificate (issued within 30 days), a signed receipt with VIN, rego and odometer, then lodge a Notice of Disposal with VicRoads.
Buyer: within 14 days, complete the online transfer with the vehicle details, verify your ID, and pay the transfer fee plus motor vehicle duty (based on sale price/market value).
Have the address and licence details matching, and don’t play “mystery price” — duty follows the higher of what you paid or what it’s worth.
Some exemptions apply (e.g., dealer trades or certain family transfers), but for most private sales it’s RWC, forms, fees, done.
Keep copies of everything, because nothing ruins a Sunday like chasing paperwork the system already ate.
