Swapping number plates isn’t witchcraft; it’s paperwork, a fee, and a screwdriver. In Australia you order or transfer plates through your state authority (VicRoads, Service NSW, TMR QLD, etc.), bring ID and registration details, and pay the relevant fee.
They’ll tell you whether you must surrender the old plates or retain them (personalised plates can be reassigned; standard plates usually stay with the vehicle).
Once issued, fit the plates with proper screws, keep them clean, upright and unobstructed—no tinted covers or cheeky spacers.
Then update your e-tag, insurance and parking accounts, and don’t drive without plates or a temporary permit—unless you enjoy roadside chats.
