Swapping a NZ driver licence for an Australian one is gloriously unglamorous bureaucracy, and it’s handled by each state and territory.
As a rule, full NZ licence holders can transfer to an equivalent local class without a driving test, usually within about 3 months (some states allow up to 6) of taking up residency.
Bring proof of identity, proof of Australian address, your NZ licence, and be ready for an eyesight check and a fee; if your NZ licence is restricted or provisional, expect similar conditions here.
You can drive on your NZ licence as a visitor in the meantime, but once you’re settled, book with your state road authority (e.g., Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR QLD) and get it sorted.
Details and deadlines vary, so check your state’s official guidance before you queue heroically at 8am.
