changing car registration from vic to wa Page 4

Moving west? You’ve got roughly 3 months after taking up residence in WA to switch your Victorian rego, or the fines will introduce themselves like uninvited magpies.

Book a WA vehicle examination (first‑time licensing) for your car, then front up to the Department of Transport with proof of identity, proof of ownership, WA address, and the car for inspection; pay stamp duty, CTP/licensing fees, and you’ll get WA plates.

Once it’s wearing black swan plates, cancel the VIC rego with VicRoads and return the plates for a pro‑rata refund—don’t forget to grab a receipt.

Pro tip: make sure the VIN and engine numbers match across the car, paperwork and PPSR; surprises are great at birthdays, not at rego counters.

Processes and forms change, so check the official WA DoT and VicRoads pages before you queue like it’s Boxing Day sales.
