If you want a cheap tow vehicle in Australia, think stout, simple, and not allergic to a Bunnings run.

Used bargains with real tow chops include Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 Di‑D (up to 3,000 kg braked), Toyota Prado 120/150 (2,500–3,000 kg), and Nissan Patrol GU 4.8/3.0 (up to 3,200–3,500 kg if set up correctly).

Budget-friendly utes like early Isuzu D‑Max/Holden Colorado can tow 3,000–3,500 kg, while a Ford Territory diesel is a sleeper pick around 2,700 kg and comfortable doing it.

Expect decent examples from about AUD 10k–25k for older SUVs/utes, with fresher, lower‑km rigs nudging AUD 30k; just leave headroom for tyres, brakes, and a proper tow kit.

Mind the fine print: GVM/GCM, towbar rating, ball weight limits, cooling, and legal load distribution will make or break your weekend—and your gearbox.

Test drive with weight if possible, get a pre‑purchase inspection, and don’t believe any listing that claims ‘tows anything’ unless it comes with a tugboat.
