cheapest car australia 2023 Page 4

In 2023, the cheapest new car in Australia was usually the MG3 Core, often advertised around $19k drive-away, with the Kia Picanto S hovering nearby depending on on-roads and deals.

Expect basic kit, a small petrol engine and sensible running costs—performance that’s more “gets it done” than “sets your soul alight.”

If you’re shopping used, tidy 5–10-year-old light hatches (Picanto, Mirage, Barina, i20, Swift) typically ran about $5k–$12k, with outliers both cheap and dear.

Check safety gear, service history and any timing belt/chain requirements; a bargain shouldn’t boomerang into big bills.

And yes, you’ll find plenty of these thrifty tins on Tradingpost—save your dollars for fuel and the occasional servo pie.
