check awd system rav4 Page 4

The “Check AWD System” light in a RAV4 usually means the car has thrown its toys out of the pram over a sensor, tyre mismatch, or low 12V battery, and has likely defaulted to front‑drive.

• Mismatched tyre sizes/pressures or uneven wear
• Tired 12V battery or dodgy alternator output
• Faulty wheel‑speed or yaw/steering angle sensor
• Damaged wiring, corroded connectors, blown AWD/ABS fuse
• Rear coupling/transfer case actuator issue or software update needed

Do this: check all tyre pressures and sizes match, test the battery, inspect fuses, then scan for codes with an OBD‑II tool—note any ABS/VSC codes as they’re all mates here.

It’s usually safe to potter around in good weather, but traction is reduced; if warning persists, book a proper diagnosis before your next wet‑road heroics.

Typical fixes range from AUD $200–$400 for a battery or $150–$400 for a sensor plus labour to AUD $800–$1,500 for an AWD actuator—cheaper than discovering understeer the expensive way.
