Start with the obvious: your odometer lives in the instrument cluster—tap the trip/stalk button to cycle past Trip A/B until the total (lifetime) reading appears.
On newer digital clusters, the owner’s manual shows which button combo reveals the permanent total, so don’t poke it like a microwave and hope.
Cross-check the number against service-book stamps, roadworthy/inspection slips, and rego records; big jumps or suspiciously neat resets are red flags.
Extra caution? A scan tool can read mileage stored in some modules, and a PPSR/inspection history may list prior readings.
Watch for tampering signs like misaligned digits (older units), scuffed cluster screws, or wear on pedals/seats that tells a different story.
If you’re buying, photograph the cluster and keep it with the receipt—future you will applaud past you’s diligence.
