checking car oil

Checking your car’s oil is gloriously unglamorous, but it saves engines and wallets.

Park on level ground, switch off, and wait 5–10 minutes so the oil drains back to the sump.

Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert fully, then pull again—your proper reading sits between the LOW and FULL marks.

If it’s below the mark, add the correct grade a little at a time, rechecking so you don’t overfill (engines hate excess enthusiasm).

Oil that looks milky, smells like fuel, or shows glitter is a mechanic-now situation, not a “she’ll be right”.

Check monthly or before big trips, and change oil and filter per the logbook—cheap insurance in AUD and sanity.
