Clutch-starting is the old-school party trick for a manual when the battery’s feeling lazier than a Sunday arvo.

Ignition to ON, select 2nd gear, clutch pedal down, and get the car rolling to about 8–15 km/h (a gentle push, slight slope, or mates with strong legs all qualify).

Quickly release the clutch and give it a dab of throttle; when the engine fires, press the clutch back in and keep it running.

Don’t try this in an automatic or most hybrids, and avoid steep hills, traffic, or wet grass unless you enjoy unintended aerobics.

If it coughs and stalls, wait a moment and try again—too many attempts can dump fuel and annoy your catalytic converter.

Once it’s alive, take a short drive to recharge, then fix the root cause so you’re not forever auditioning for a push-start relay team.
