The Hyundai Santa Fe is generally solid, but like any family bus that hauls kids, dogs and camping gear, a few foibles do crop up in Australia.

Here are the usual suspects to check before you hand over the folding:

• 2.2 CRDi: DPF clogging from lots of short trips; look for regen warnings or limp mode, and prefer cars that get regular highway runs
• Auto transmission (older 6-speed): hesitation or shudder; software updates and fluid changes help, and a test drive should expose 2–3 shift flare
• Steering column knock (intermediate shaft) at low speed; often solved with lubrication or replacement
• Door lock actuators getting lazy; inexpensive but annoying
• Infotainment or reverse camera glitches; firmware updates or head unit replacement, so test every button and the camera feed
• Suspension bush wear and rear shock mounts causing thumps on rough roads; listen over speed bumps
• Diesel EGR/intake carbon build-up over time; rough idle or reduced power, cleaned during service

Before you buy, chase full service history, evidence of transmission and DPF maintenance, and take a decent highway run to confirm regen behaviour.
