• Diesel DPF clogging on short-trip driving; look for frequent regens, rising oil level, or a smoky cold start.
• EGR/intake soot build-up and turbo hose leaks or actuator faults causing limp mode.
• Automatic transmission hesitation or shudder; overdue fluid changes or a hot ATF smell are red flags.
• AWD coupling or rear diff noises under load; binding on tight turns isn’t “character”.
• Front suspension bushings and struts clunking; steering column knock on rough roads.
• Electrical gremlins: door-lock actuators, reverse camera and infotainment freezes; weak batteries upset stop–start.
• Panoramic sunroof creaks/leaks and A/C condenser stone damage on highway cars.

Buy smart: demand a full service history, take a long test drive (cold and hot), scan for codes, and check recall status via VIN. Independent pre-purchase inspection is cheap insurance. Do that, and it’ll cart kids, kayaks and the family Labrador without drama.
