common problems with subaru liberty

The Subaru Liberty is a loyal companion, but even loyal companions shed a little on the carpet. Here are the gremlins most likely to RSVP to your ownership party:

• EJ25 head-gasket seepage on older 2.5s (overheating, sweet-smelling exhaust, mayo under the cap).
• CVT shudder/whine on many 2010s cars; fluid changes and software updates can help.
• Front control-arm bushes and wheel bearings wearing early, causing clunks and uneven tyre wear.
• Oil consumption on some FB25 engines—keep an eye on the dipstick between services.
• Liberty GT turbos: blocked banjo filters starving the turbo—fresh oil and inspections are your friend.
• AWD binding from mismatched tyres; keep all four the same brand/age and rotate religiously.
• Aging O2 sensors/catalytic converters tossing codes as kilometres pile on.

None of these are deal-breakers, but a pre-purchase inspection, cooling-system pressure test and a thorough CVT road test are money well spent. Match tyres, confirm service history (timing belt/water pump on older cars), and enjoy the all-weather grip without the drama.
