common problems with toyota hiace Page 2

The Toyota HiAce is famously tough, but even the cockroaches have a complaints list.

On older diesels, listen for injector rattle and check for "black death" (soot around the injectors), while newer 2.8s can suffer DPF tantrums if they only do cafe runs.

Doors and bodies work hard too, so sliding door rollers, latches and rust around the rear step or sills are usual suspects; commercial life isn’t gentle.

Before you hand over cash, cold-start it, check service history, and take a long test drive with some weight in the back—pretend it’s actually working.

• Diesel injector seat leaks and rough idle (older 3.0L).
• DPF clogging/regeneration issues on short-trip use (later diesels).
• Oil seep from rocker/timing covers at higher km.
• Worn sliding door rollers/latches; tailshaft centre bearing noise.
• Rust in rear step, door bottoms, roof gutters and underbody.

Budget for fresh fluids, quality filters and suspension bushes; it’ll pay you back in quiet kilometres.
