common problems with toyota landcruiser prado Page 6

The Prado’s reputation is tough-as-nails, but even a legend can have the occasional squeak, rattle, and grumble.

If you’re shopping or diagnosing, here are the usual suspects owners report:

• DPF regeneration issues on some 2.8‑litre diesels (around early years) if driven mostly on short trips
• Leaking injector seats on earlier 3.0‑litre diesels causing blow‑by and contaminated oil
• EGR and intake carbon build‑up reducing performance over time
• KDSS hydraulic leaks or worn suspension bushes on high‑km 150 Series
• Rear door hinge wear from the externally mounted spare and heavy touring gear

Look for complete service history, smooth cold starts, clean oil, no warning lights after a decent highway run, and a suspension that tracks straight without clunks.

Get a pre‑purchase inspection and you’ll likely end up with a faithful bush buddy rather than a project car with camping stickers.
