Cross‑traffic recognition is the car’s way of spotting vehicles sneaking across your path when you can’t—usually while reversing out of a parking spot, sometimes creeping forward at blind junctions. Using rear (and occasionally front) radar and cameras, it flags approaching traffic with beeps, dash alerts, and in some cars a nudge of the brakes if you ignore the fanfare. Rear Cross‑Traffic Alert (RCTA) works when reversing; Front Cross‑Traffic Alert (FCTA) does the same at low speeds when edging out nose‑first. It’s brilliant in shopping centres where utes and concrete pillars conspire against you. But it’s not magic: rain, dirt, high speeds, cyclists, or sharp angles can blunt its vision, so you still need eyes, mirrors, and a smidge of patience. Treat it as a co‑pilot, not a force field.
