Think the outback is just red dirt? Give it a decent winter drink and Australia’s deserts explode with wildflowers from late winter to spring.

In WA’s Mid West around Mullewa you’ll get carpets of everlastings, while SA’s outback, the NSW Corner Country and the NT’s Red Centre put on their own technicolour tantrums.

Icons like the Sturt Desert Pea and poached-egg daisy turn up when the rain’s been kind, with wattles joining in like they own the joint.

Blooming is fickle—no rain, no show—so check park reports before driving 1,000 km for a beige paddock, and stick to tracks so the next lot can enjoy it too.

Pack water, a hat, and lower your expectations just enough to be delighted when nature decides to show off.
