differential lock Page 367

A differential lock is a mechanical feature that forces both wheels on an axle to rotate at the same speed, regardless of traction differences. It's a godsend for off-roaders and farmers stuck in mud or uneven terrain — no more spinning one wheel helplessly while the other twiddles. Typically found in 4x4 vehicles, engaging the diff lock can dramatically improve traction but at the cost of increased tyre wear and drivetrain stress on paved roads.

Key points:

• Function: Locks the differential to equalize wheel rotation.
• Use case: Off-road or slippery conditions.
• Caution: Avoid using on high-traction surfaces to prevent damage.
