Dogs driving cars? Adorable on TV, illegal in Australia — only licensed humans are allowed behind the wheel, and having a pet on your lap can cop you a fine.

The law also requires you to maintain proper control of the vehicle, so a loose hound trying to change the radio is a hard no. Beyond the rules, it's simply unsafe for you and the pooch.

If your mate's coming along, use a proper restraint like a crash-tested harness, crate, or cargo barrier, and keep them well away from airbags. Take breaks, offer water, and crack a window like a civilised chauffeur. Need kit? Tradingpost has pet restraints and travel gear without the boutique price tag.
