Double demerit points are the road‑rules equivalent of being told off by a megaphone—louder, harsher, and especially common on holidays. They operate in NSW, ACT and WA during public holidays and peak periods; VIC, SA, TAS and NT don’t run them, and QLD only doubles points for repeat offences within 12 months. The usual targets are:

• Speeding
• Illegal mobile phone use
• Seatbelt and child‑restraint offences
• Motorcycle helmet offences

Fines aren’t doubled, but the points are—so your licence can disappear faster than a servo pie on a road trip. Check your state’s road authority for the exact dates and definitions.
