driving on kangaroo island Page 477

Driving on Kangaroo Island is gloriously simple: book the car ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, and double‑check your rental’s fine print before you roll aboard.

Main routes are sealed, but many enticing detours are gravel—slow down, keep it tidy, and carry a full‑size spare if you’ve got one.

Wildlife owns the schedule at dawn and dusk; back off the throttle unless you fancy explaining a roo‑shaped dimple to your insurer.

Fuel and shops are clustered in towns like Kingscote, Penneshaw and American River, so top up when you can; mobile reception can be patchy.

You don’t need a 4WD for the headline sights, but after rain or on remote tracks it helps—always drive to conditions and heed park closures.
