eating and drinking while driving Page 573

Across Australia, eating or drinking (non‑alcoholic) while driving isn’t outright illegal, but it can still get you pinged.

If it distracts you or you don’t have proper control of the vehicle, expect fines and demerit points under careless driving or similar rules.

Messy food, hot drinks and one-handed steering are the fast track to drama—and your insurer won’t love the explanation, either.

Smart move: pull over, demolish the snack, then carry on; and of course, alcohol and driving mix about as well as oil and water.

Check your state or territory’s current guidance for the exact penalties before turning the cabin into a café.
