In Australia, EV novated leasing is popular because eligible zero/low-emission cars can be FBT-exempt if first held after 1 July 2022 and priced under the fuel‑efficient LCT threshold (around AUD $89k). PHEVs lose that exemption from 1 April 2025 unless your arrangement started earlier, in which case it’s generally grandfathered for the lease term. Salary packaging can bundle finance and running costs pre‑tax, often with GST savings; business leases may access depreciation and GST credits, but FBT still applies unless exempt. Costs swing with price, residual, term and your tax bracket—so get quotes from a few salary packaging mobs and dealers to compare apples with slightly fancier apples. Incentives and fees vary by state and change more often than fuel prices, so check the latest before signing anything. Bottom line: the numbers can be very sharp on the right EV under the cap; just run the maths before your heart runs off with the shiny new plug.
