Victoria tried the EV “road‑user charge” experiment, then the High Court binned it in October 2023.
So right now there’s no per‑kilometre EV tax in Victoria, and VicRoads has stopped collecting odometer readings and invoices.
For context, the scrapped rates were about ~2.8¢/km for BEVs and ~2.3¢/km for PHEVs, indexed annually—file under “things that didn’t last”.
The government has been unwinding the scheme and arranging refunds/adjustments; check your VicRoads account for your status.
You’ll still cop the usual on‑road costs—stamp duty, rego, and potentially luxury car tax if you buy too fancy—plus, yes, you’ll pay for electrons.
National road pricing may return one day, but for now, Victorian EV owners can put the calculator down and enjoy the silence.
